Make Room For Your Car In Your Garage Before Cold Weather Hits

While many people hate the idea of scrapping ice and snow off of their windshield on a cold winter morning, the idea of cleaning out the garage and making room for that car sounds even worse.  However, cleaning out your garage does not have to be a huge ordeal if you have a plan in place to get through the clutter quickly. Make this the year that you stop scrapping ice off of your car and put it in the garage instead with these helpful tips.

Sort Everything in the Garage

The first thing you will want to do is set up different stations or areas. There should be three different areas. Those areas should be a keep pile, a throw away pile and a sell or donate pile.

Once you have defined space for each of these areas, begin pulling everything out of the garage and placing your belongings into one of these three piles. Pulling everything out of the garage allows you to verify that you have indeed gone through every box or tote and have not overlooked any items that you may no longer need.

Once you have removed everything from the garage, take a bit of time to sweep the floor and possibly use a concrete cleaner to clean it. It isn't often that your garage is completely empty, so now is a great time to get this task done as well.

Get Rid of the Garbage

After sorting your garage possessions into different piles, you will want to do is get rid of the garbage pile. If you have a small amount of junk, driving to the landfill may be a great option for you. But, if you have a larger amount of garbage, getting a dumpster rental or enlisting the help of junk removal services may be ideal. A junk removal company can remove the junk right away, so you don't have to have a dumpster sitting in front of your home for an extended period of time.

Box or Bag up Your Donate or Sell Pile

The next step is to box or bag up the items in your donate or sell pile. If you are going to donate the items in the pile, now is a great time to run to your favorite charity or thrift store and drop the belongings off. If you are going to sell the items by having a garage sale, you may want to consider taking the time to price each item before you place it in a bag or box. This can make the process faster when you do have a garage sale.

Maximize the Space in Your Garage

Now you are down to your keep pile or station. Before you place those items back in your garage, you will want to maximize the space in your garage. A few of the items you can set up in your garage to maximize the space include:

  • Shelving Units
  • Cabinets
  • Peg Boards
  • Overhead Wooden Beams

Once you have maximized the space in your garage, you will want to place the items in your keep pile back in the garage, using the storage systems you now have in place.

Installing and using any of these items in your garage allows you to use more of your wall and overhead space for storage, rather than the floor of the garage. Ultimately, this allows you to still have the space in your garage for the items you need to store out there, while keeping the floor of the garage free for your car.

Cleaning a cluttered garage is never going to be a fast project. However, if you have a plan in place, you can make the process easier on yourself. Instead of putting off this task and leaving your car out in the cold, make this the winter that you finally clean your garage and put your car inside.

Home Renovation Expectations: Knowing What's To Come

When I bought my first house, I did it with the expectation of needing to do some remodeling. I wasn't, however, prepared for how complex the renovation process was. From upgrading the retaining walls to adding cosmetic features like the stone patio, I was inundated with decisions to make and materials to select. I wished that I had known how much was involved from the beginning so that I could be better prepared. That's when I decided to use what I'd learned to help others better prepare for their own remodeling projects. I hope the information here helps you to see what you can expect as you get ready to expand your property or renovate the existing space.
