Tips For Choosing A Washer And Dryer For Your Tiny Home

Choosing to live in a tiny home doesn't mean you have to give up every luxury you had in a larger house. If you don't want to be bothered with hunting down a laundry mat or washing your clothes by hand, then installing a washer and dryer is a great way to enjoy the convenience of doing laundry at home. Here are a few things to consider when purchasing these appliances for your tiny home.

Available Space

One of the primary things you have to think about when deciding to put a washer and dryer in your tiny home is the amount of space available. This will likely tie in directly with how much you expect to use the machines. It may not be a sensible investment for a person who will only use these appliance every once in awhile. On the other hand, it may be worthwhile if you wash clothing once or twice a week.

The washer will need to be connected to a water supply, so it may be best to place the machine in the kitchen or bathroom. This means you need to make sure there is enough space in either of these areas to accommodate the machine.

Utility Supply and Usage

Even small units will use quite a bit of electricity and water. However, this is generally only a concern if you're not hooked up to public utilities. If you're only using solar energy for your tiny home, for example, then you may need to add a generator to provide additional electricity for those days when you run the washer and dryer.

Washing machines will also increase your water usage and produce more gray water. You will likely need to either empty your existing tank more frequently or install a larger holding tank to accommodate the extra liquid. If you already use your existing gray water for plants and gardens, then you'll need to avoid using detergents that are toxic to plants.

Load Capacity

You can get a washer and dryer as small as you need it. There are even some handheld washing machines. The issue is the number of loads you can do is directly related to the size of the machine. A smaller machine means smaller loads and more time spent doing laundry.

There are several different types of washer and dryer configurations that will allow you to enjoy doing laundry in your home. The one that will be best for you will depend on your needs and available space.

  • All in one – This is a washer that also dries clothes by putting them through an extended spin cycle. These appliances make it easier to fit a washer and dryer in your tiny home. However, clothes don't get 100 percent dry. Also, if one part of the machine breaks, you may be stuck without the use of the entire machine until it's fixed.
  • Separate compact machines – As noted before, washers and dryers come in sizes small enough to fit comfortably in a tiny home, but you'll still need to find room for them. Additionally, good quality machines can sometimes cost as much as the full-sized versions.
  • Washer only – One configuration option is to only purchase a washing machine and forgo the dryer. You will still need to find someplace to hang your laundry to air dry.

Whichever type and brand of washer and dryer you opt to install, it's important that you maintain the machines to ensure they provide many years of use. Home Renovation Expectations: Knowing What's To Come

When I bought my first house, I did it with the expectation of needing to do some remodeling. I wasn't, however, prepared for how complex the renovation process was. From upgrading the retaining walls to adding cosmetic features like the stone patio, I was inundated with decisions to make and materials to select. I wished that I had known how much was involved from the beginning so that I could be better prepared. That's when I decided to use what I'd learned to help others better prepare for their own remodeling projects. I hope the information here helps you to see what you can expect as you get ready to expand your property or renovate the existing space.
